Characters

  • Brom Tolmen, 2nd level human knight (played by yours truly)
  • Impudence-Hath-Victory, or “Ivy,” 2nd level elf enchanter
  • Kungus Cobwallop, 2nd level woodgrue enchanter
  • Marib Twiggler, 2nd level mossling friar

Ruffians & Rumors

The session began with the immediate aftermath of Ivy’s slap. The elderly man behind the bar shouted, “Leave my great-nephew alone!” Austache and his cronies hurried to extinguish the flames, but the gang of youths proved more hindrance than help; Austache was burnt badly, likely scarred for life.

The barman called for the Ale Guard and shouted at the party to get out. Marib escorted the mossling couple outside. Austache’s gang of youths postured aggressively but seemed unwilling to escalate the fight themselves. Brom chided Austache and his toadies, telling them they’d gotten off easily, as Ivy commanded tremendous power. The party made their exit.

Two members of the Ale Guard arrived shortly, and Brom and Kungus plead the case on Ivy’s behalf. The Ale Guard were inclined to accept that Austache had been “bothering folks like he always does.” Austache then emerged from The Clashed Antler, badly burnt but also hamming it up. During the ensuing conversation, Ivy declared, “To the monstrous I may seem a monster.” They got a slap on the wrist and avoided jail time by paying a fine—no doubt because the Ale Guard are familiar with Austache’s behavior.

The party made their way to Raptappen’s Quadrant, a nicer inn west of the Turret Gate. There, they dined and drank in a private room, served by none other than Aspice Raptappen herself, who seemed to possess powers of clairvoyance. She sensed that Marib had recently had a brush with death and requested that the party return with tales of death and danger.

Marib rose early on the 13th of Chysting to pray at the church of Saint Waylaine. Doing so earned her the ability to invoke Saint Waylaine’s Reproof once. The party then sold most of the treasure they’d procured to Hague Jarricorn at The Sea of Stars. The party then bought herbs and fungi from Wyrmspittle the herbalist.

During their day in Prigwort, the party also gathered several rumors:

  • Something fishy was purported to be going on at a bakery in the woods. “Those people don’t order nearly enough flour for all the pastries they make.”
  • The nobles of Harrowmoor Keep allegedly consort with a monstrous entity in the lake that grants them wisdom in exchange for their mortal souls.
  • Mostlemyre Drouge of Bag Manor seeks adventurers to do his “dirty work.”
  • The elevated Smyde Humbebuff, leader of House Pilston, had sought to undermine the town council by nominating himself for the hitherto nonexistent role of Council Overmaster.
  • Duke Thespian III offers a bounty to anyone who can slay whatever harries the Horse Eye Encampments.

Later, Sergeant Marge Breckson arrested Rodger Burl, and the party assisted her in an interrogation. They showed Rodger the note they’d recovered and explained they’d found it on Grognott’s body. Rodger proved reluctant to talk at first, insisting that his family would be killed if he cooperated. Ivy devised a clever lie that the party had captured a crookhorn willing to point a hoof at Rodger. This prompted him to provide a list of Ale Guard members in league with The Nag Lord. Marge and the party promised to keep Rodger’s family safe, and Marge assured Rodger that he wouldn’t hang.
